A practical guide for Indian students planning to study abroad — from choosing a country to getting scholarships and managing visa.

Why Study Abroad?

International education offers exposure to global teaching methods, diverse cultures, and stronger alumni networks in global companies. But it comes with a significant cost. Here's everything you need to know.

Country-wise Overview

USA

  • Annual Cost: ₹40–80 lakhs (tuition + living)
  • Top Exams: SAT/ACT (UG), GRE/GMAT (PG), TOEFL/IELTS
  • Visa: F-1 Student Visa
  • Strengths: Best universities globally (MIT, Stanford, Harvard), massive tech industry
  • Post-Study Work: OPT (1 year), STEM OPT extension (3 years)

UK

  • Annual Cost: ₹35–55 lakhs
  • Top Exams: IELTS (6.5+), A-Levels or equivalent
  • Visa: Student Visa (Tier 4)
  • Strengths: Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, UCL; 3-year UG programs
  • Post-Study Work: Graduate Visa (2 years)

Canada

  • Annual Cost: ₹25–45 lakhs
  • Top Exams: IELTS (6.0+)
  • Visa: Study Permit
  • Strengths: Pathway to PR; multicultural; safe
  • Post-Study Work: PGWP (up to 3 years)

Germany

  • Annual Cost: ₹5–15 lakhs (many public universities are FREE!)
  • Top Exams: TestDaF/DSH (German) or IELTS for English programs
  • Visa: German Student Visa

Australia

  • Post-Study Work: 2–4 years depending on study location

Key Scholarships for Indian Students

  1. Fulbright-Nehru Fellowships (USA) — Fully funded
  2. Commonwealth Scholarship (UK) — Fully funded
  3. DAAD Scholarship (Germany) — ₹80,000/month stipend
  4. Chevening Scholarship (UK) — Fully funded for Master's
  5. Inlaks Foundation — Up to ₹70 lakhs for 20 students/year
  6. Aga Khan Foundation — 50% grant, 50% loan
  7. QS Scholarships — Multiple universities list on QS website

SAT Preparation (for USA)

The SAT has two sections: Evidence-Based Reading & Writing (800 marks) and Math (800 marks). Total: 1600.

For top US universities:

  • Ivy League / MIT / Stanford: 1500+
  • Top 50 universities: 1350+
  • State Universities: 1150+

Preparation resources: Khan Academy (free, official SAT partner), College Panda, Barron's SAT

Practical Tips

  1. Apply 12–18 months in advance — US Common App opens August, deadlines in January
  2. Build your profile early: Research, projects, community service, leadership roles
  3. Strong SOP and LORs matter more than pure grades at many colleges
  4. Education loans: Avail of education loans (SBI Scholar Loan, HDFC Credila) — interest is tax-deductible under Section 80E
  5. Forex cards: Niyo, HDFC Forex, or a USD account before departure

Is It Worth the Cost?

For a ₹70 lakh investment (4 years in USA), you'd need a starting salary of ₹1.5 crore/year to recover in under 2 years (at US salary levels, this is achievable in tech). For Germany (near-zero fees), it's almost always worth it. Calculate your expected ROI based on target country and field before committing.
