A deep dive into NIRF 2024 rankings — who moved up, who dropped, surprises, and what the rankings really mean for students.

What is NIRF?

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is India's official college ranking system by the Ministry of Education. Rankings are based on five parameters:

  1. Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR) — 30%
  2. Research and Professional Practice (RP) — 30%
  3. Graduation Outcomes (GO) — 20%
  4. Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) — 10%
  5. Peer Perception — 10%

  • IIM Ahmedabad reclaimed #1 in Management, surpassing IIM Bangalore
  • BITS Pilani dropped slightly but remains the top private engineering college
  • VIT Vellore improved significantly — now in top 15 engineering

What NIRF Rankings Don't Tell You

  1. Placement quality: A college can rank high in NIRF but have poor placements
  2. Campus experience: Rankings don't capture culture, clubs, or campus life
  3. Specialization quality: A college ranked #20 overall might have the best CSE department
  4. Location advantage: NIRF doesn't factor in how much the city helps your career

How to Use NIRF Rankings

Use NIRF as one of five factors in your college decision. Cross-reference with:

  • NAAC accreditation grade
  • Placement reports (directly from the college)
  • Alumni feedback (LinkedIn, Quora)
  • Your actual entrance exam rank eligibility
